CHAPTER VII – TECHNOLOGY and R&D
7.2.1. Laboratories
Technical Research and Quality Control (TAKK) Department has 6 different labs in headquarter
premises named;
Hydraulic Model Laboratory,
Concrete and Materials Laboratory,
Soil Mechanics Laboratory,
Chemistry Laboratory,
Isotope Laboratory,
Calibration Laboratory.
There are total 200 quality control laboratories (concrete, soil mechanics, and chemistry) 25 of
which in regional directorates and 175 of which in field sections and construction sites.
Research and Development (R&D) Studies
As per the terms of reference come into effect 27.07.2010, all sort of applied research and
experimental development studies needed in the first instance by DSI in the headquarter or in the
field sections are planned and administrated. Besides, TAKK attaches importance to cooperation
with universities and other research institutions in research and development studies.
Training Studies
Postgraduate International Sediment Transportation Course in UNESCO program and
supported by UNESCO is organized in the premises of TAKK. The Course supported by DSI,
UNESCO, Turkish Scientific and Development Department (TÜBİTAK), Turkish Cooperation
and Development Agency (TİKA) was organized every year since 1984 and it has been organized
biennial since 2003. Lectures of the course are presented by leading universities in Turkey
(Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Yıldız Technical University,
Gazi University).
Accreditation Studies for Experiment Laboratory
Being awere of “accreditation” which means that laboratories are assessed by nationally and
internationally technical criteria, sanctioned their qualifications, and supervised regularly, TAKK
Department serves with accredited laboratories since 2004. Also, regional laboratories have been
accredited by far. Many experiments and calibration works accredited by Turkish Accreditation
Institution (TÜRKAK) within the context of TS EN ISO IEC 17025 standard continues.
Hydraulic Model Laboratory
Model studies are carried out to find optimum solutions and to avoid mistakes in the high cost
structures since all effective factors can not be determined by mathematical methods.
The scope of the hydraulic model works comprises hydraulic structures such as dam, harbor,
jetty, river structure, flood control. Hydraulic Model Laboratory Section Directorates not only
meet the demands from DSI General Directorate or DSI Regional Directorates but also other
institutions and private companies by means of protocols. Having being equipped with modern
electronic tools, Hydraulic Model Laboratory has played crucial role in solving hydraulic and
environmental issues by meeting the needs of DSI as well as of industry and academies.
Flow meters used to gauge the current of rivers are calibrated in Calibration center located in the
laboratory. Clibration works have been accredited by Turkish Accreditation Institution
(TÜRKAK) within the context of TS EN ISO IEC 17025.
