CHAPTER II - LAND & WATER RESOURCES
Water Consumption by Sectors in Turkey
Utilization of Water Resources
In 2011, 50 billion m
3
water was consumed in various sectors in Turkey; 36 billion m
3
in the
agriculture, 7 billion m
3
in the water supply, 7 billion m
3
in the industry. This sum corresponds to
development of only 45% of the available exploitable potential of 112 billion m
3
. Turkey aims at
using the available potential in the country by 2023, which is the centenary of Turkish Republic.
Hydraulic Structures in Turkey
According to the standards of ICOLD (International Committee on Large Dams), providing a
dam’s height from foundation is more than 15 m and its reservoir volume is equal or more than
3hm
3
, this dam is classified as a “large dam”. As seen from the table below, the number of large
dams constructed by DSİ is 741. If 40 dams constructed by other institutions are added to this,
the total number amounts to 781 dams. DSİ has built 277
large dams within the framework of
large-scale water projects, while the remaining 464 dams are within the framework of the smaller-
scale water projects. The total maximum reservoir capacity of these 277 large dams is about 150
km
3
. The details on water resources development can be seen in the table:
