CHAPTER III - HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY
Hydroelectric power plants are to be preferred because these have the most environment-friendly
technologies with the lowest risk potential. These plants are able to respond unexpected demand
fluctuations. Thence, they are regarded as the fundamental power plants in Turkey. Hydroelectric
power is environment-friendly, clean, renewable, able to meet peak demands, highly efficient (over
90%), costless in terms of fuel, a balancer of energy prices, long-lived (200 years), quick to recover
the investment costs (5-10 years), low operational costs (app. 0.2 cent/kWh), and an indigenous
source of energy that is not dependant on other countries.
Even if half of the world’s
economically viable hydroelectric
potential
were
developed,
greenhouse emissions would be
decreased by 13%. Compared to
other
power
plants,
the
hydroelectric plants have the lowest
operational cost, the longest
operational life and the highest
efficiency rates. Hydropower is not
only clean and renewable power
source but also has great advantage
in the regulation of electric
network.
